These unique baskets are handcrafted using the age-old techniques that can be found in Rwanda's national museum. They are beautifully woven around an inner frame, made by an expert bamboo weaver, then a grass weaver creates the exterior. So this is a two-stage, two-artisan basket. One basket takes about 6 days to make. You can watch a video of one being made here.
The design on the basket signifies the layers of the hills of Rwanda. The dark colour in the baskets is made by using a banana flower as an application. The flowers blue sap bonds with the soot from the bottom of a cooking pot to colour the grass.
